I’ve been on an old French movie kick as of late, and I must say, they are fantastic, beautiful, and some, quite risqué. One of those is a film called Belle De Jour starring Catherine Deneuve. Her beauty alone is enough to intrigue, but the story itself has so much to offer. It’s a surreal erotica and melodrama folded into one. She Wasn’t Turning Tricks Before She Got Hitched. The beginning of the movie shows flashes of images that are fantasy, but also images that may have been her past. Things happening to her at an earlier age could have shaped the thoughts she’s having now. One of the fantasy dreams is of her in a romantic horse-drawn carriage with her husband, when he suddenly pulls it aside. The coachmen help her husband pull her out and the three of them whip her, in broad daylight, and progress to a much darker fantasy. When she wakes up she always tells her husband that she is having “The carriage dream again.” However, he never knows the details and she leads him to believe it’s just a sweet dream. We know as the viewers, that is far from the truth. Her dreams become a reality when she becomes the Married Call Girl.
She hears of a place where women can go. Women that go there want money, but she’s got plenty of that. She’s a wealthy housewife who is becoming ill from boredom. She loves her husband very much, but she can no longer ignore her intrusive thoughts. She starts and immediately regrets her decision. But it’s too late, she’s got waiting customers! She has to be done by 5 PM to be home and ready for her husband’s arrival from his job at the hospital. This married call girl is the Belle De Jour… the beauty of the day. She is only available then, which makes her that much more appealing. She isn’t available whenever they want. They must work around her schedule. Her fears become her pleasures and her fantasies become her realities. There is only one problem, the guy who can’t get enough.
