It is no secret that intimacy can play a huge factor when it comes to relieving stress in your daily life. Many of us crave partnership and view intimacy as something that is to be shared between ourselves and a companion. Answer me this, though: who knows what makes you feel good better than you do? Practicing mindful masturbation only heightens the pleasure and comfort in making ourselves feel good. Oftentimes societal norms, poor body image, or just an overall disinterest in putting ourselves first stops us from practicing self-care and self-love. Because of this, I believe mindful masturbation is a wonderful way to begin practicing both.
Now, what exactly is mindful masturbation? It has many names: meditation masturbation, erotic meditation, orgasmic meditation, etc. But they all revolve around the same basic concept: adding pleasureable sensations as a focal point during meditation to help us to center ourselves within our bodies. Practicing mindful masturbation helps us to stay in the present moment, and allows us to let go of any outside factors that may keep us from believing we deserve to experience full and complete pleasure. We essentially create a safe, judgment-free zone for ourselves where we’re able to feel comfortable in our skin and wholly open ourselves up to the pleasure we are providing to ourselves.
The more you’re practicing mindful masturbation, the more confident you will become. This is a wonderful attribute to add to your bedroom life with a partner. When you’ve mastered mindful masturbation, pleasure with a partner is almost guaranteed to feel heightened. The key is to go slow and ease into it. Explore parts of your partner you never would’ve thought to (eyelids, back of the knees, crease of the elbow, etc). Letting your partner know that every part of them is safe with you increases their calmness and confidence as well.
Set the right mood, and give yourself and your partner a safe space to let go. Arguably the most important thing is to make sure that you actually have the emotional energy to give. This goes for when you’re practicing mindful masturbation as well. A big thing that may help would be to schedule mindful sex. Of course, spontaneous sex here and there is unavoidable. But mindful sex should be 100% premeditated. Keep in mind that it’s okay, and even encouraged, to go slow. Unhurried touch, deep breathing, and gradual escalation thoroughly enhance the experience.
Many health benefits have been linked to practicing mindful masturbation. By allowing yourself to approach pleasure with a centered mindset, you may be able to drastically improve sexual problems such as anxiety, erectile dysfunction, porn addiction, low libido, body image issues, and even more. You improve your relationship with yourself. Not to mention the obvious benefits of sharing ones self completely with a partner. This not only benefits you in the bedroom but encourages openness in all aspects of the relationship.
It may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But I do believe it is worth trying at least once. I, myself, have found it to be incredibly beneficial to my self-love and self-care journeys. It’s helped me delve deeper into what truly brings me the most pleasure. It has allowed me to open myself up to different experiences and become more confident in my ability to please myself. Becoming more versed in my body’s pleasure centers will also, no doubt, assist me in helping future partners become fluent in what makes me feel good as well.
