Obedience training always begins long before someone realizes they’re participating. Most men imagine it starts with commands, restraints, or intimidation, but they’re wrong. The best obedience training happens so naturally that by the time a man notices he’s following your lead, he’s already forgotten he intended to resist. When Marcus booked an evening with me, he included one sentence in his message that made me smile. “Just so you know… nobody tells me what to do.” I almost laughed out loud.

Men who announce that sort of thing usually convince themselves they’re immune to influence. They mistake confidence for discipline, and discipline for control. In my experience, they’re often the most fascinating people to study. I rented an old Victorian manor for the weekend. The house sat at the end of a tree-lined driveway, quiet enough that the world seemed to disappear once the front gate closed. It wasn’t decorated the way people imagine. There were no dramatic props waiting to intimidate guests. Instead, soft jazz drifted through the sitting room while a fire crackled quietly in the fireplace.

Marcus arrived precisely on time. He looked around the room with obvious curiosity. “This isn’t what I expected.” he said. “I hear that a lot,” I replied. I took his coat and pointed toward a leather chair beside the fireplace. “You can sit there.” He thanked me and sat down without hesitation. I smiled to myself. That was instruction number one.

Over the next half hour, I never once ordered him around. Instead, I invited him to do little things to give him obedience training, nothing like becoming his gooning mistress. “Would you mind moving your glass over here?” Or “Come stand by the window for a second.”

“Take a look at this painting.” He followed every suggestion while we talked about work, travel, books, and the strange assumptions people make about confidence. The conversation flowed easily enough that he never questioned why I always seemed to decide where we stood, where we walked, or when we changed topics. “I want to kiss you, can you resist the urge to take me in your arms?” I asked while leaning towards his lips. The kiss was hot, and it only made my obedience training feel that much more successful.

I Was Nothing He Expected

When we settled back into our chairs, Marcus leaned forward and smiled. “I thought this was going to be more… intense.” The sensualist in me wanted to bring him closer and take the shame away.

“It already is.” He laughed. “I don’t think so.” I tilted my head. “How many times have you followed my instructions tonight?” He shrugged. “Two? Three?” I picked up my notebook from the coffee table. “Would you like the actual number?” His smile faded just enough for me to know I had his attention. I began reading everything I had listed. That realization lingered between us much longer than either of us spoke. Real obedience training isn’t about overpowering someone. It’s about creating an environment where cooperation feels effortless.
