I reached for my phone, only to find out that there was no signal. “Fantastic, just fucking  wonderful,” I said sarcastically. Taking a long, deep breath after adjusting my coat, scarf, and hat, I stepped out into the biting cold. The snow was already up to my knees, and I struggled as I made my way to the house I’d noticed earlier. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to let me use their phone, or maybe even give me a ride home. As I got closer, I spotted someone shoveling their driveway. He looked up as I approached and began to walk toward me.  Concern was all over his face.

“Hey, are you alright, Ms?” he asked, his words came out warm and soothing. I shook my head yes.  My teeth were chattering from the cold as I explained my traumatic car situation right down the road. “So now,  I’m stuck. I have a phone that has no signal, and I was hoping I could use your phone to call for help.”  I managed to say all this as my teeth kept clicking. He nodded, propped his shovel against the house, and reached his hand out to me. “Absolutely, Ms. Come in, you must be cold.” He guided me into his heated home, and I was instantly cloaked with warmth.

I accepted it, his grip firm yet comforting. “I’m Mallory.” I followed Camron into his living room, where a fire crackled warmly in the fireplace.
