Sex Toy Review: Glass, Plastic, or Steel?

Let’s take into account materials for this sex toy review.

For this sex toy review, I’m excluding any unusual materials or unsafe ones. A lot of materials are porous- little holes in them, including synthetic flesh. However, these are nearly impossible to clean and should only be used with condoms- so they’re out of the ranking. Other toy materials need similar considerations: anything made of a precious stone, jelly, or even wood needs either lots of upkeep or a barrier.

So, discluding those, I’ve reviewed three common materials for a sex toy review- which one is your favorite?

Glass Toys: Versatile

A glass sex toy is like a private sexy voyeur fantasy. However, they have no give. Compared to even hard plastic, they will not contort to your curves (and maybe that’s what you want!). Some find glass sex toys a little too hard, while others (like myself), love that unforgiving hardness. Be aware, if it’s your first time with a glass sex toy, that it feels bigger inside you than a plastic toy.

They’re great for temperature play, too. This sex toy review needs to include that! Put them in the fridge to cool them or heat them up in some warm water, and they’ll be ready to go! But be aware they keep those temperatures for a long time, so use caution you haven’t gone to extremes.

Another caution is to make sure you check them for cracks and chips, as with hard plastic. It’s absolutely a downside but needs to be taken into account.

Sex Toy Review: Plastics

Soft plastics are the way to go. Not only are they the most common material, but if your hole isn’t “open” to harder intrusions, soft plastics bend more with your body. This makes them less difficult for some and preferred for others. Be aware- the more soft plastic there is on a toy, the harder it feels. Hard plastics are often used for vibrators, but they still have more give than the above or below entries for this sex toy review. The hardness makes those vibrations travel and feel great on a clit. At least in my experience!

Plastics, whether hard or soft, are easy to clean. But make sure you use water-based lube on either! Silicone-based lubes, often used for anal, will melt your toys over time. I have to mention that in this sex toy review!

The Dark Horse: Steel

Steel is not often used as a sex toy material, but it isn’t unusual. Steel dildos tend to be anal rather than vaginal. In fact, a lot of the pros for glass toys e apply to steel ones as well. They are strong, very easy to clean, and tough to damage. Unlike glass, they take heat and cold easily- which means it wears off quickly, too. But if you like something strong that can heat up or cool down, and have your partner quickly heat it up or cool it during play (easily done with a bowl of ice water, for example), steel is the way to go. Plus, you don’t have to check it for breaking or chips!
